Double Bill

It's my great honor to have Pine-Thomas Productions: A History and Filmography chosen as one of Classic Images' Best Books of the Year. The "Dollar Bills" and I are in great company here, as you can see below.

The real achievement, of course, belongs to Bill Pine and Bill Thomas, two guys who loved movies, and loved making them. I hope it would please them that their work is remembered and enjoyed in the 21st century.

Kind Words

I'm pleased by the warm response given by two early reviewers of Pine-Thomas Productions: A History and Filmography. First up was Booklist, published by the American Library Association, which called it "a treat for serious film buffs and students." Not far behind was the January issue of Classic Images, saying, "If you love B movies, this is for you ... David C. Tucker did an exceptional job of bringing the Two Dollar Bills to life and honoring their work."

If you're interested in meeting a fascinating bunch of characters -- on both sides of the screen -- I hope you'll give it a look.

Happy New Year!

A Very Special Review

After a whole lotta work (and quite a bit of fun), my eighth book was released a few days ago by McFarland.

It's too soon to know how readers and reviewers will respond to the book. But here's the reaction it received from Bill Pine's granddaughter:

"As the third generation in the film business, I'm grateful this book truly captures the spirit and philosophy of my grandfather, his partner Bill, and the movies they made. 'The Dollar Bills' would be pleased."

So am I. Pleased and grateful.

Cover Up!

Here's an advance look at the cover for my forthcoming book on Pine-Thomas Productions. That's Mr. Thomas on the left, and Mr. Pine on the right, by the way.

I hope you'll give it a look when it's published by McFarland & Co. later this year.

Coming Attraction

I'm pleased to announce that my eighth book will be published by McFarland next year.

It's a history and filmography of Pine-Thomas Productions, makers of more than 75 films in the 1940s and 1950s. The book offers much previously unpublished information about company founders Bill Pine and Bill Thomas, nicknamed "The Dollar Bills" for their ability to produce entertaining movies on modest budgets. In researching the book, I've been fortunate to enjoy the support and assistance of both the Pine and Thomas families, as well as an array of fascinating archival resources. There are also vintage photos you won't see anywhere else.

I hope you'll give it a look when it's released.
